SpaceX’s headquarters in Starbase, Texas, located at the state’s southern tip in the Rio Grande Valley, is a sight to behold. Nestled amidst miles of dusty dirt roads, the emergence of SpaceX in this once quiet area has brought about a dramatic transformation.
Previously known for its coastal wildlife and bird watching opportunities, the area surrounding Starbase was home to a few dozen residences, mostly winter homes for retirees. The nearest major city, Brownsville, sits over 20 miles away on the border with Matamoros, Mexico. The contrast between Starbase and Brownsville is stark – Starbase is a bustling company town filled with transplants from cities like Austin and San Francisco, drawn to the area for work opportunities. On the other hand, Brownsville’s predominantly Latino population is engaged in farming and shrimping.
Despite the differences, Starbase and Brownsville share resources, with some SpaceX employees choosing to reside in Brownsville and sending their children to school in the city. The company currently employs over 4,000 workers at its Starbase facilities, with the majority hailing from the local area. SpaceX plans to expand its workforce to around 8,000 employees this year, further solidifying its presence in the region.
