At least 31 workers rescued after tunnel collapse in Los Angeles: LAFD

A major industrial complex in Los Angeles was rocked by a tunnel collapse on Wednesday evening, prompting a swift response from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Thankfully, all 31 workers who were trapped in the tunnel were safely rescued, marking a miraculous outcome in the face of a potentially disastrous situation.

The collapse occurred in an 18-foot diameter tunnel that was being constructed for municipal wastewater management. The underground excavation site, located about 5 to 6 miles south of the sole entry point, experienced a collapse of undetermined depth. Despite the challenging conditions, the trapped workers managed to navigate their way over a pile of loose soil to reunite with their coworkers on the other side of the collapse. They were then shuttled several at a time by tunnel vehicle to the entry point more than five miles away.

LAFD Interim Chief Ronnie Villanueva expressed gratitude for the successful rescue, stating, “Tonight, we were lucky.” Mayor Karen Bass also commended the efforts of first responders and the resilience of the workers, emphasizing the importance of their safety and well-being.

Over 100 LAFD responders, including members of the Urban Search and Rescue team, were on the scene to assist with the rescue operation. Workers were brought out of the tunnel area in a cage hoisted up by a crane, a method that ensured their safe extraction from the collapsed tunnel. Despite the ordeal, all 31 workers emerged from the tunnel without any visible injuries.

The tunnel project, which is slated for completion by 2027, is a crucial infrastructure development for the city of Los Angeles. Mayor Bass personally thanked the first responders for their swift action in rescuing the trapped workers, acknowledging their bravery and dedication to ensuring the safety of all individuals involved.
