Attorney alleges US deported clients to Iran without due process: ‘It’s unconscionable’
An attorney representing two individuals who were forcefully deported to Iran this week has raised serious concerns about the lack of due process in their removal from the United States. Ali Herischi, the legal representative of the deportees, disclosed to ABC News that his clients, who sought asylum after entering the country through the Southern border in the past year, were unexpectedly deported to Iran without any prior notice.
One of the individuals deported is a Christian convert who arrived in the U.S. earlier this year with his pregnant wife. Herischi revealed that despite his client’s asylum claim being rejected and an order of removal issued, the man’s wife, who recently gave birth, remains in the U.S. and is not currently detained.
The sudden disappearance of the deportees from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainee locator system came as a shock to Herischi and his clients. The lawyer expressed frustration over the lack of information regarding the deportations and the abrupt manner in which they were carried out.
Reports from Iranian state media indicated that around 120 Iranian nationals detained in the U.S. would be repatriated to Iran in the near future. However, the U.S. government has not officially acknowledged these deportations, leaving many unanswered questions for concerned parties.
Herischi condemned the deportations as “unconscionable” and highlighted the risks faced by individuals who oppose the Iranian regime. He emphasized that his clients, who bravely challenge the oppressive regime in Iran, should not be handed back to potential persecution and harm.
The attorney represents a total of 25 individuals who fear being deported to Iran, further underscoring the gravity of the situation. He criticized the U.S. foreign policy for betraying those who resist the Iranian government and advocated for their protection instead of returning them to oppressive forces.
ABC News reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment on the deportations but has not yet received a response. The lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the removal of Iranian nationals raises serious human rights concerns and calls into question the adherence to proper legal procedures in such cases.
