Bill Gates abruptly backs out of India AI summit; Sam Altman and Daio Amodei awkwardly avoid clasping hands next to PM Modi
Bill Gates decided to withdraw from delivering the keynote address at a significant AI summit in India, following the release of emails that shed light on his connection with Jeffrey Epstein.
The event in New Delhi was meant to showcase the country’s AI capabilities on a global platform but has been plagued by issues such as traffic congestion, awkward moments on stage, and overall disorganization.
Although the Gates Foundation stated that Gates opted out of the keynote speech to keep the focus on the summit’s priorities, there has been speculation surrounding his sudden cancellation.
Gates has been under scrutiny since the release of Epstein’s emails, with one draft message suggesting Gates’ involvement in facilitating sexual encounters. Gates has denied any wrongdoing in connection to Epstein.
Following Gates’ cancellation, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also pulled out of the event due to unforeseen circumstances, adding to the challenges faced by the AI summit.
Despite the setbacks, the summit saw some notable figures in attendance, including awkward moments between AI leaders Altman and Amodei during a photo op with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The event also highlighted the competition between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, with Altman expressing his views on the Super Bowl ads mocking ChatGPT.
Modi emphasized the importance of children’s safety on AI platforms and the launch of the New Delhi Frontier AI Commitments during the summit.
Despite raising over $200 billion for AI infrastructure, attendees criticized the summit for organizational chaos and lack of planning, with incidents like the closure of exhibition halls and traffic jams causing inconvenience.
Overall, the AI summit in India faced challenges and controversies, highlighting the complexities of the AI landscape and the need for responsible development.
