Bille August Set to Shoot Julius Caesar TV Series

Oscar-Winning Director Bille August Set to Helm New Series “Julius Caesar”

Oscar-winning director Bille August, known for his recent success with the TV series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” is gearing up for another high-end period show that will transport viewers back to Ancient Rome and explore the intriguing figure of Julius Caesar.

In a statement to Variety, August emphasized the contemporary relevance of the project, highlighting how “The Republic of Rome was the first democracy to be undermined by a government that elected a dictator, granting him absolute powers.”

The upcoming series, tentatively titled “Julius Caesar,” will delve into “the story of a great leader intoxicated by power,” as August explained, shedding light on the deep psychological complexities that ultimately led to his downfall.

Teaming up with screenwriter Greg Latter once again, August is set to bring this captivating narrative to life. The series is being produced by Italy’s Palomar, a Mediawan-owned company that also spearheaded the production of “The Count of Monte Cristo.”

Filming is scheduled to begin in Italy in early 2027, promising a visually stunning portrayal of Ancient Rome. Casting details are yet to be announced.

Palomar founder and CEO, Carlo Degli Esposti, emphasized the importance of bringing Julius Caesar’s story to the screen in today’s turbulent world. He described Caesar as a complex character, embodying qualities of ambition, generosity, cruelty, and a relentless pursuit of power.

Highlighting the significance of portraying such a contradictory figure, Degli Esposti noted that now more than ever, it is crucial to explore the complexities of power and its impact on individuals and societies.

While there have been previous TV series and docudramas centered around Julius Caesar, August’s upcoming project promises to offer a fresh perspective on the legendary leader, delving into his rise to power and eventual downfall.

August’s previous success with “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which captivated audiences with its lush visuals and compelling storytelling, sets high expectations for his latest endeavor. With a talented team behind the scenes and a captivating subject at the forefront, “Julius Caesar” is poised to make a significant impact in the world of historical dramas.
