Billionaire Ken Griffin Says Global Economy in ‘Very Treacherous Moment,’ Warns Recession Inevitable if Strait of Hormuz Lockdown Persists
The global economy is facing a serious risk due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to Ken Griffin, the founder and CEO of hedge fund Citadel. Speaking at the Semafor World Economy Summit in Washington, D.C., Griffin highlighted the impact of the Iran war on the energy sector, warning of potential consequences for the world economy.
Griffin expressed concerns about the “energy crisis” triggered by the conflict, emphasizing that it could lead to demand destruction and economic deceleration on a global scale. The risk of a recession has increased, leading central banks to face difficult decisions regarding monetary policy. The inflationary spike resulting from the crisis may force central banks to raise rates in order to anchor inflation expectations.
The CEO also pointed out the potential consequences of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, stating that if the crucial waterway remains unnavigable for the next 6 to 12 months, the world could be pushed into a recession with no way to avoid it. However, Griffin also highlighted the possibility of a shift towards alternative energy sources in response to the supply disruptions in crude oil and natural gas.
Griffin predicted a rapid transition towards wind, nuclear, and solar energy as the world seeks to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. This shift towards alternative energy sources may accelerate existing trends and lead to a significant decrease in dependence on traditional fuels over the next few years.
As the global economy navigates the challenges posed by the Middle East conflict, Griffin’s insights shed light on the potential pathways for energy transition and economic resilience in the face of geopolitical uncertainties.
