BowFlex adjustable dumbbells recalled after more than 100 dislodging injuries
BowFlex is facing a major recall of millions of its adjustable dumbbells due to safety concerns. The weight plates on these popular dumbbells have been reported to dislodge during use, leading to over 100 injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes, and contusions. This alarming issue has prompted the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to take action.
A total of 3,844,200 units of the BowFlex adjustable dumbbells are being recalled, with 3.7 million units sold by Nautilus Inc., which changed its name to BowFlex in 2023. The company responsible for the recall, Johnson Health Tech Retail, acquired assets from BowFlex after the company filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024. Customers who purchased the recalled dumbbells from Johnson Health Tech Retail will be eligible for a refund in the form of a voucher or replacement units.
In response to the recall, Johnson Health Tech Retail stated, “A proactive and broad initiation of this voluntary recall is consistent with our fundamental mission to serve consumers with high-quality and durable fitness equipment.” However, some consumer advocacy groups, like Consumer Reports, have criticized the company’s remedy as insufficient. They believe that consumers should be able to receive a full refund without any conditions attached.
The recalled dumbbell sets, known as the “BowFlex 552, 52.5-lb Adjustable Dumbbells” and the “BowFlex 1090, 90-lb Adjustable Dumbbells,” were sold in pairs and single units. These black weights come with handles, weight plates, and a plastic storage tray, with the 1090 dumbbells being adjustable to weigh between 10 and 90 pounds.
Owners of the recalled dumbbells are urged by the CPSC to stop using them immediately and seek a refund. Consumers can fill out a claim form on the Johnson Health Tech Retail website to initiate the refund process.
It is crucial for customers who have purchased these BowFlex adjustable dumbbells to take action promptly to ensure their safety and prevent any potential injuries. The company is working diligently to address this issue and provide appropriate solutions for affected consumers.
