Building under construction in the Philippines collapses, possibly trapping dozens

A tragic incident unfolded in Angeles City, Pampanga province, as a nine-story building under construction collapsed in the early hours of Sunday morning. Despite the chaos and destruction caused by the collapse, 22 workers managed to escape while others remain unaccounted for.

The collapse occurred during a thunderstorm, adding to the intensity of the situation. Police Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez reported that more than 100 police and government personnel were on site, working tirelessly to rescue those believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. While no deaths have been confirmed at this time, some of the workers who escaped sustained injuries during the ordeal.

As the rescue efforts continued, the exact number of individuals still trapped inside the collapsed building remained uncertain. Jay Pelayo, the head of Angeles City’s information office, stated that approximately 30 workers could potentially be stuck in the debris. This estimate was provided by a construction foreman who narrowly escaped as the building crumbled.

Angeles City has a rich history, once serving as the location of one of the largest U.S. Air Force bases outside of the United States mainland. Following its closure in the early 1990s, the area transformed into a bustling hub of entertainment and commerce, contributing to the development of Angeles and surrounding areas in Luzon, the main northern region of the Philippines.

The former U.S. Air Force base, now known as the Clark Freeport Zone, is situated approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Metro Manila. This location holds significance in the region’s history and continues to play a role in the economic and social landscape of the area.

As the investigation into the building collapse unfolds and rescue operations persist, the community remains united in support and hope for the safe recovery of all individuals affected by this devastating event.
