Calif. Jewish leaders blast socialist Mayor Eduardo Martinez over antisemitic conspiracy theories

Jewish leaders and groups in California’s Bay Area are expressing outrage over socialist Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez’s recent apology for sharing antisemitic conspiracies online. The mayor, who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), faced backlash after amplifying posts on LinkedIn that promoted hateful rhetoric blaming Israel for rising antisemitism and labeling the Bondi Beach terror attack in Australia as a “false flag” operation.

Despite deleting the offensive posts and issuing an apology, critics are not satisfied with Martinez’s response. Sam Yebri, a former Los Angeles City Council candidate, condemned Martinez’s actions as beyond a mistake, emphasizing the real-world consequences of spreading such hate speech. Rabbi Dean Kertesz also criticized Martinez, describing his behavior as blatant hatred towards Jews and warning of the dangerous path such rhetoric can lead to.

In light of the rising antisemitism concerns, the Bay Area Jewish community has formed a new political advocacy organization. The group was established to provide a platform for lobbying, pressuring lawmakers, and engaging in advocacy efforts to combat antisemitism. Neal Rubin, president of the organization, highlighted the importance of building influence with lawmakers to promote shared values within the community.

Jonathan Mintzer, the organization’s director, emphasized that antisemitism is no longer confined to the shadows but is increasingly manifesting in mainstream politics and public office. Mintzer criticized Martinez’s apology for lacking accountability and urged the mayor to understand the harmful impact of his actions on the Jewish community.

Jeremy Russell, director of marketing and communications at the Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), pointed out the city council’s involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has fueled tensions within the Jewish community. Russell highlighted the need for the newly formed advocacy group to address the escalating antisemitism and advocate for the safety and well-being of the Jewish population.

Martinez’s role as mayor has amplified the consequences of his actions, with his words carrying added weight and significance. The JCRC has called for Martinez’s resignation, citing a pattern of behavior that reflects poorly on his judgment and awareness. The organization also raised concerns about Martinez’s appearance at a pro-Palestine event wearing a hat with an acronym associated with anti-Israel sentiments.

The DSA, to which Martinez belongs, has taken anti-Israel positions that have contributed to the normalization of antisemitism under the guise of political speech. Jewish leaders are calling for Martinez’s resignation and urging DSA candidates and officials to refrain from inciting violence against Jews in America.

Efforts to reach Martinez’s office and the East Bay DSA for comment were unsuccessful. The DSA indicated that the request would be forwarded to its Steering Committee Chairs for review.
