California woman sues Costco for millions after liquor cabinet allegedly falls on her
A California woman, Sadie Novotny, is pursuing a lawsuit against Costco seeking millions in damages for injuries she sustained during a visit to one of the retailer’s stores in Santa Rosa. The incident occurred when a heavy liquor cabinet on display at the Costco Wholesale store fell on Novotny, causing multiple severe injuries. Novotny claims she suffered a closed head injury, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury.
Novotny, accompanied by her husband, was shopping at Costco on March 22 when the accident occurred. She sought medical attention immediately after the incident and was diagnosed with a mild concussion. However, she continues to experience difficulties with word-finding, vision problems, and headaches as a result of the incident.
Claude Wyle, an injury attorney representing Novotny, stated that his client is suing Costco for general negligence, premises liability, and products liability. The lawsuit alleges that Costco failed to address the hazardous conditions that led to the incident and did not adequately train its employees to maintain merchandise properly. Novotny holds Costco responsible for her injuries and is seeking substantial damages.
Despite requests for comment, Costco has not responded to inquiries regarding the incident. Additionally, Wyle mentioned that Costco possesses a video of the incident, which has not been disclosed to him yet. The lawsuit has been transferred to the U.S. District Court for Northern California at Costco’s request.
In conclusion, Novotny’s lawsuit against Costco highlights the importance of maintaining safe shopping environments and properly training employees to prevent accidents like the one she experienced. The case serves as a reminder for retailers to prioritize customer safety and take necessary precautions to avoid such incidents in the future.
