Charges filed 18 months after police pursuit crash killed fleeing driver’s passenger
Chicago Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal 2024 Police Pursuit
A Chicago man, Christian Rios, 24, was arrested on Tuesday to face charges related to an October 2024 police pursuit that resulted in the death of his 18-year-old passenger. The charges include reckless homicide by motor vehicle and aggravated possession of a weapon.
The incident took place on October 1, 2024, when officers from the Priority Response Team were patrolling the 5500 block of South Pulaski. They observed two individuals they believed to be armed entering a black Lexus sedan around 1:58 a.m. Upon approaching the sedan, the vehicle fled, leading to a police pursuit.
The chase came to a tragic end at the 3500 block of South Ashland, where the sedan collided with an SUV at an intersection before crashing into a building.
Unfortunately, the passenger in the sedan was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Rios, sustained a leg injury and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. Police recovered two weapons from the scene.
The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Thankfully, no officers were harmed during the pursuit.
Despite the severity of the incident, it remains unclear why charges were not brought immediately following the crash.
