‘Cherished’ Nigerian news anchor plunges 3-stories to her death trying to flee armed robbers

A tragic incident occurred in Abuja, Nigeria, where a beloved news anchor, Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, lost her life in a desperate attempt to escape armed robbers who had broken into her apartment. Sommie, aged 29, worked as a reporter and producer at Arise News Channel and was well-known for her vibrant spirit and passion for journalism.

The heartbreaking incident took place early Monday morning when violent thieves invaded Sommie’s three-story apartment in the capital city. In a bid to escape the terrifying situation, Sommie made the harrowing decision to jump from the third story of her building. She was found unconscious by the police outside her residence and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving her colleagues, friends, and family devastated.

Colleagues at Arise News Channel took to social media to express their grief over the loss of Sommie, highlighting her exceptional talent and dedication to her work. Described as a cherished member of the team, Sommie’s legacy as a talented journalist and a devoted friend will forever be remembered.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command launched an investigation into the violent break-in, labeling it as a “cruel and senseless” crime. Despite deploying intelligence and operational resources to track down the armed robbers, the culprits remain at large as of now.

FCT Commissioner Ajao Adewale condemned the heinous act, emphasizing the need for a swift apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators. He revealed that the armed thugs targeted Unique Apartments, a residential building with 18 units, and shot one of the security guards before forcibly entering Sommie’s apartment.

The commissioner explained that the chaotic situation led Sommie to make the tragic decision to jump from the third story of the building out of fear. The circumstances surrounding her death have left the community in shock and sorrow, with calls for justice echoing through the city.
