China Launches World’s First Space Computing Network : 1,000 AI Satellites to Process Data in Orbit
On July 19, 2026, the global tech landscape shifted toward the stars as China officially launched the Xingshu Plan, the world’s first commercial space-based computing network. Led by Shanghai Xingshu Tiansuan Space Technology, the initiative aims to deploy up to 1,000 AI-enabled satellites to process data directly in orbit.
Processing AI in the Stars
Showcase at the 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, the Xingshu Plan addresses the bottleneck of ground-based data centers. By performing AI workloads in space, the network reduces latency and bypasses heavy bandwidth demands. President Xi Jinping highlighted the launch as a cornerstone of China’s bid to lead a “new global AI order,” shifting from traditional data downlinks to immediate, in-orbit “information downlinks.”
Leadership and Labor Shifts
While China looks upward, American AI giants are restructuring for the compute war. OpenAI has named Uday Ruddaraju (formerly of xAI and AWS) as its new CTO of Compute. Ruddaraju is tasked with building the world’s largest infrastructure footprint to support upcoming frontier models.
However, the rapid integration of AI is meeting resistance on the ground. In South Korea, Hyundai Motor workers staged the auto industry’s first-ever strike explicitly triggered by humanoid robots. Over 40,000 union members are demanding “Atlas consent” before Boston Dynamics’ robots are deployed on assembly lines, fearing massive job displacement.
Infrastructure Vulnerabilities
The fragility of automated systems was also on display in San Francisco. Waymo was forced to pause its robotaxi service for approximately one hour following a PG&E power outage. While Waymo has previously navigated the road toward more driverless cars, this incident highlights how even the most advanced AI remains tethered to local utility stability.
As we move further into 2026, the “Xingshu Plan” and the Hyundai strikes represent two sides of the same coin: an unstoppable push for AI efficiency met by the growing necessity of human safeguards.
