Chipotle uses Zipline drone delivery to fly orders to customers

Chipotle has taken to the skies in Texas with the launch of an innovative autonomous aerial delivery service. Partnering with Zipline, a drone delivery and logistics provider, Chipotle has introduced Zipotle, a new delivery service for digital orders in the Dallas area. Customers can now have their favorite Chipotle meals delivered right to their doorstep in just a few minutes, thanks to small aircraft called Zips.

Initially, only a select number of customers will have the opportunity to experience Zipotle, but Chipotle plans to expand the service in the coming weeks. This new delivery method aims to provide a faster and fresher dining experience for customers, with the entire Chipotle menu available for drone delivery in the Dallas area. Orders can be conveniently placed through the Zipline app, which is accessible on both Apple and Android devices.

How Zipotle Works

When a customer places an order, a Chipotle employee prepares and packages the meal, which is then placed at a designated Zipping Point. A Zip drone picks up the order and swiftly delivers it to the customer’s location. Upon arrival, the autonomous aircraft hovers about 300 feet in the air before gently lowering and placing the order on the ground.

The first location to offer Zipotle delivery is situated at 3109 Lakeview Pkwy in Rowlett, a suburb located in the eastern part of Dallas. Chipotle’s president and chief strategy and technology officer, Curt Garner, expressed excitement about the new delivery service, emphasizing its convenience for customers in various settings, such as backyards and public parks.

Zipline CEO and co-founder, Rinaudo Cliffton, highlighted the speed and efficiency of Zipotle, describing it as a futuristic yet practical solution for food delivery. Each autonomous aircraft is currently capable of carrying orders weighing up to 5.5 pounds, with plans to increase the weight limit to 8 pounds in the future.

Chipotle’s venture into aerial delivery comes in response to customer feedback regarding portion sizes at certain locations. The company has made efforts to address these concerns and enhance the overall dining experience for its patrons.
