Coffee Prices Soar 21% as Congress Targets Tariffs
Coffee prices are on the rise, and consumers are feeling the pinch. A bipartisan group of lawmakers has taken notice and is pushing for action to address the issue. The price of coffee has increased by a staggering 20.9% in the past year, with a 3.6% jump from July to August alone, according to the latest consumer price index report. Experts are warning that even higher retail coffee prices are on the horizon.
The surge in coffee prices can be attributed to a variety of factors, including supply concerns following a drought in Brazil, where a significant portion of the U.S.’s coffee supply originates. In addition, tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on coffee-producing countries have added further pressure to prices. Threats of high tariffs on countries like Colombia and Vietnam have only exacerbated the situation.
In response to the escalating coffee prices, several House lawmakers have introduced a bill to repeal tariffs on coffee. The bill, known as the “No Coffee Tax Act,” aims to lower tariffs on coffee to Biden-era rates, which were at 0% for most items other than coffee substitutes containing coffee. The lawmakers behind the bill, Rep. Don Bacon (R.-Neb.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), argue that it doesn’t make sense to levy tariffs on a product that the U.S. does not even grow.
The fate of the “No Coffee Tax Act” remains uncertain as it faces challenges in Congress. The bill would require support from additional Republicans, many of whom have historically advocated for free trade. However, going against the president’s tariff goals could carry political consequences for lawmakers, as those who have criticized tariffs in the past have risked straining their relationships with the White House.
As consumers continue to feel the impact of rising coffee prices at the grocery store, there is a possibility that legislation like the “No Coffee Tax Act” could gain momentum in Congress. Whether or not the bill will pass remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the issue of coffee prices is one that lawmakers are taking seriously, and consumers are hopeful for relief in the near future.
