Congressional Democrats Launch Probe Into Deportation of US Military Members and Their Families
A coalition of Congressional Democrats has launched an investigation into the detention and deportation of noncitizen U.S. service members, veterans, and military family members. The lawmakers are seeking answers from the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense about how immigration enforcement decisions are being made.
The investigation is being led by Rep. Maggie Goodlander and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, and Dick Durbin, alongside Reps. Chrissy Houlahan and Delia Ramirez. More than 50 lawmakers joined their request for information, according to Goodlander’s office.
At the center of the dispute is an April 2025 policy change by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE rescinded guidance that treated military service as a “significant mitigating factor” in immigration enforcement cases and replaced it with a less protective policy. Democrats say the shift could affect military readiness, morale, recruitment, and the stability of military households.
The lawmakers are asking for records showing how many noncitizens serve in the military, how many service members, veterans, or relatives have been arrested, detained, or deported since January 2025, and what information the Pentagon shares with DHS and ICE.
The issue has also surfaced in congressional hearings. In December, Rep. Seth Magaziner confronted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with the case of a deported combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Noem said she would review the case, according to PBS NewsHour.
For military families, the investigation could clarify what protections remain available and whether agencies are coordinating enforcement in ways Congress did not authorize.
