Convicted criminals on the loose in Mexico after thugs ram prison gate during riot over cartel killing

Escape Attempt in Puerto Vallarta Prison Leads to 23 Inmates on the Run

Twenty-three inmates managed to escape and tragically, one guard lost his life after armed assailants launched an attack on a prison in the picturesque Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta. The incident occurred amidst escalating violence in the region following the death of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho,” in a military operation.

The attackers forcefully entered the Centro Integral de Justicia Regional on Sunday by ramming a vehicle through the prison gate and engaging in gunfire. The breach resulted in a riot within the facility, complicating the response to the escape. Regrettably, a guard was killed during the chaos, as reported by Vallarta Daily. Despite calling for reinforcements, logistical challenges on the roads hindered a prompt security response.

Following a head count on Monday, it was confirmed that 23 inmates had successfully fled the prison. A manhunt has since been initiated to locate and apprehend the escapees. Order has been restored within the prison, which is now operating under heightened security measures as authorities conduct investigations into the incident.

Escalating Violence in Mexico Amidst El Mencho’s Demise

The prison break occurred amidst a wave of violence that has gripped 20 out of Mexico’s 32 states following the elimination of El Mencho, the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. The death toll includes 73 individuals, with 25 members of the Mexican National Guard falling victim to six separate attacks.

In response to the chaos, tourists in Puerto Vallarta were advised to remain indoors as criminal gangs unleashed havoc on the streets, setting fires and brandishing weapons. The city, located in Jalisco and known as a popular beach destination, has been a focal point for cartel activities.

Soldiers patrol on a street in a tourist area a day after a series of blockades and attacks by organized crime following a military operation in which cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera, “El Mencho,” was killed in Jalisco state.

Approximately 10,000 Mexican soldiers have been deployed nationwide to quell the escalating violence. The US State Department had previously offered a substantial reward of up to $15 million for any information leading to the capture of El Mencho.

Jalisco New Generation Cartel: A Rising Criminal Entity

The Jalisco New Generation cartel, established in 2009, has quickly risen to become one of the most influential and rapidly expanding criminal organizations in Mexico. The recent events in Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding regions highlight the ongoing struggle against organized crime in the country.
