Crazy video shows mob ransack NYC Scientology church as 3 busted for possible social media stunt
Three Arrested for Hate Crime Charges in Connection with Church of Scientology Ransacking
Three individuals have been arrested and charged with hate crimes for their alleged involvement in the ransacking of the Church of Scientology in Midtown earlier this month. Jaelen Dinkens, 19, and Mohammed Amolegbe, 21, are facing charges of burglary, criminal mischief, and assault, while Tashaun Simms, 28, is charged with obstructing governmental administration and tampering with physical evidence. The incident occurred on May 2 when a group of 31 individuals forcibly entered the church premises during a seminar, causing chaos and destruction.
The NYPD released footage of the suspects, showing them wearing backpacks and hoodies as they stormed into the facility. The group knocked over objects, sprayed silly string at security cameras, and caused approximately $10,000 worth of damages. One employee was kicked in the leg during the incident but only sustained minor injuries.
While the motive for the attack was not immediately clear, the Church of Scientology International believes it was part of a social media trend known as “speed running.” This trend involves organized trespassing into religious and public facilities for the purpose of gaining social media attention.
The church issued a statement condemning the incident, stating, “The disruption endangered staff, parishioners, and visitors, including individuals attending a seminar at the time. This was not a peaceful visit or lawful protest. It was a coordinated act involving forced entry, property damage, and physical aggression inside a house of worship.”
The Midtown incident is said to be part of a larger trend on TikTok called “Scientology speed running,” where individuals film themselves charging into properties associated with the Church of Scientology for thrill-seeking purposes. The church has expressed concern over the safety of its staff and members in light of these events.
