AI and Machine Learning: Navigating the Future of Work

Recent reports of job cuts, particularly in the tech sector, have sparked discussions about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the workforce. Will this advanced technology eventually replace human workers?

This question weighed heavily on Kaitlyn McCormick’s mind as she pursued her bachelor’s degree in information technology. Now, she is furthering her education with a master’s degree in AI and machine learning at CSU Global, an online university affiliated with the Colorado State University system.

McCormick, a seasoned IT professional with over 16 years of experience, currently works as a software engineer at Q2 Software Inc. She shared her thoughts on the integration of AI into their platform, noting that some employees expressed apprehension about the future.

Despite her own uncertainties, McCormick, who is also a single mother and deaf, emphasized the importance of embracing AI as a tool rather than a threat. She believes that human input will always be essential in working alongside AI.

Matthew Brown, the program director of computer science at CSU Global, echoed McCormick’s sentiments, emphasizing that AI systems still require human interaction and data input to function effectively.

AI and machine learning technologies are designed to mimic human intelligence by analyzing vast amounts of data and making decisions at a speed unmatched by humans alone. While some may fear that AI will replace traditional jobs, Brown believes that roles will evolve rather than disappear entirely.

He provided an example of how AI can streamline processes, allowing professionals to focus on higher-level tasks. Certain jobs, such as data entry and coding, may undergo changes or diminish, but new opportunities in AI-related fields are emerging.

As the landscape of work evolves, educational programs like CSU Global’s master’s degree in AI and machine learning are equipping students with the skills needed to navigate this changing environment. Brown emphasized the importance of understanding and effectively utilizing AI in order to succeed in today’s job market.
