David Stearns not ruling out starter prospects as Mets bullpen boost option
The New York Mets are looking to bolster their bullpen as the trade deadline approaches, with president of baseball operations David Stearns eyeing external additions to strengthen the pitching staff. However, if external acquisitions do not materialize, the Mets may turn to their top starting prospects at Triple-A Syracuse, Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean, to provide relief help in the final stretch of the season.
Sproat, who struggled earlier in the season, has turned things around and is on a streak of 23 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. McLean, on the other hand, has been consistent with a 2.58 ERA in 17 games between Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton. Both pitchers have shown promise and could be potential call-ups to the major league bullpen.
While the Mets’ rotation is currently healthy, Stearns is cautious about converting minor league starters into relievers without being certain that they will not be needed for starting depth. He emphasized the difficulty of reversing such a decision within the same season and wants to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the young pitchers’ arms.
Stearns has previously experimented with top starting prospects like Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta in the bullpen during his time with the Brewers, and he may consider a similar approach with Sproat and McLean if needed. Alternatively, the two pitchers could be called up to fill a rotation spot or continue their development in the minors.
The Mets are also anticipating the return of outfielder Starling Marte, who has been sidelined since July 6 with a right knee bruise. Marte is progressing well in his recovery and could be back in the lineup soon without the need for a rehab assignment. Pitcher José Buttó is also nearing a return after a successful rehab outing with Syracuse, while Paul Blackburn is set to make his second rehab start following a right shoulder impingement.
In roster moves, the Mets reclaimed righty Rico Garcia, who had a brief stint with the Yankees before being designated for assignment. Garcia had previously spent the season in Syracuse and appeared in two games for the Mets earlier in the month. Additionally, Richard Lovelady cleared waivers and was outrighted to Syracuse, while Dedniel Núñez was transferred to the 60-day IL due to elbow surgery.
Overall, the Mets are exploring various options to fortify their bullpen and bolster their pitching staff as they aim to make a push towards the postseason. With promising young arms like Sproat and McLean in the mix, the team is hopeful for a strong finish to the season.
