Demand so strong Philip Morris moved fast to build its Aurora plant

Philip Morris International has recently increased production of its popular ZYN nicotine pouches at a new factory located in Aurora, just south of Denver International Airport.

PMI promotes ZYN pouches as a safer alternative to traditional methods of nicotine consumption like smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco. However, due to FDA regulations, the company cannot market the pouches as a smoking cessation product.

In January 2025, the Food and Drug Administration approved ZYN as the first nicotine pouch for marketing in the U.S., stating that it is beneficial for public health. However, the FDA did not “approve” the pouches as it still considers all nicotine products to be harmful and potentially addictive.

Instead, PMI uses terms like “no smoke,” “no spitting,” and “no tobacco leaf” to describe the pouches.

Brian Erkkila, PMI’s senior adviser of scientific engagement, highlighted that smoking remains the primary preventable cause of death and disease in the U.S. With nearly 30 million Americans still smoking, 500,000 people die from cigarette smoking each year.

Smokers expose themselves to over 1,000 compounds and carcinogens with each cigarette, including harmful substances like carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and ammonia, which can lead to various cancers and cardiovascular diseases.

Enter ZYN pouches, available in 6-milligram and 3-milligram sizes with flavors like Chill, Menthol, and Citrus. The pouches contain pharmaceutical-grade nicotine extracted from tobacco leaves but without the toxins found in cigarettes.

The production process involves mixing nicotine with a plant-based filler and flavorings before packaging the pouches. The Aurora plant, one of three facilities producing ZYN pouches in the U.S., is expected to create 500 jobs.

While ZYN pouches have gained popularity, there are concerns regarding their addictive nature and potential health risks, especially among underage users. Public health officials emphasize the importance of addressing addiction rather than switching to alternative nicotine products.

Despite differing opinions, PMI’s investment in the Aurora plant is seen as a boost to the local economy, creating jobs and generating economic benefits. The company follows strict regulations to prevent underage access to its products and ensures compliance with FDA guidelines.

Through incentives provided by the city of Aurora and state agencies, PMI aims to establish a responsible corporate partnership while contributing to community growth and economic development.

As the debate on nicotine pouches continues, PMI remains committed to upholding industry standards and promoting adult use of its products responsibly.
