Directors Guild of America Reaches Four-Year Deal With Major Studios

The recent negotiations between the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and major studios have concluded with a tentative four-year deal. The agreement, which is yet to be approved by the union’s board and members, marks the end of this year’s major labor negotiations with minimal drama.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed by the DGA, as is customary until the National Board completes its review. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has now successfully reached four-year agreements with all three major above-the-line guilds. SAG-AFTRA ratified their contract last week, while the Writers Guild of America approved a four-year deal in April.

In a statement, the AMPTP expressed satisfaction with the tentative agreement reached with the DGA, acknowledging the hard work and commitment of all parties involved in securing a fair deal that promotes stability in the entertainment industry. Talks between the DGA and studios have been ongoing since May 11, with the previous contract set to expire on June 30.

The AMPTP’s goal in this year’s negotiations was to ensure a longer period of labor peace following the crippling strikes of 2023. While the initial aim was for contracts to last up to five years, the agreements with major unions have settled on a four-year term, following the pattern set by the WGA negotiations.

One of the key focal points in the DGA talks, similar to the WGA, has been the health fund. With significant losses in recent years, the DGA was expected to negotiate for higher employer contributions and a reduction in benefits to stabilize the fund. Additionally, like the other guilds, the DGA has advocated for increased protections regarding artificial intelligence and measures to promote the hiring of DGA members.

The successful conclusion of negotiations between the DGA and major studios signals a positive step towards a more stable and prosperous entertainment industry. As the industry continues to evolve, these agreements play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of all involved parties.
