Djokovic jokes that he’s challenging Serena Williams to come back to tennis

Novak Djokovic has a bold idea to entice Serena Williams back onto the tennis tour: challenge her to do it. After Williams made a surprise appearance to help induct rival Maria Sharapova into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Djokovic praised the gesture as a “beautiful moment.”

During a post-match interview at the U.S. Open, Djokovic expressed his admiration for Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name. Despite stepping away from the sport after the 2022 U.S. Open, Williams has not officially retired, choosing to frame her departure as an evolution rather than a retirement.

Djokovic, with a mischievous smile, extended a challenge to Williams to return to the tour next year. He emphasized Williams’ competitive spirit, noting that she never backs down from a challenge. As Williams approaches her 44th birthday next month, her older sister Venus, aged 45, is set to compete in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in two years at the U.S. Open.

The tennis world eagerly awaits Williams’ decision, as her presence on the tour would undoubtedly add excitement and star power to the sport. Djokovic’s playful challenge may just be the nudge she needs to make a comeback.
