Don’t make the mistake we did in San Francisco by electing Zohran Mamdani
San Francisco’s cautionary tale: What New Yorkers can learn from charismatic leaders
The City by the Bay has learned a hard lesson about the dangers of charismatic leaders like Zohran Mamdani. San Francisco, once a thriving city, fell into disarray under the leadership of magnetic populists who promised big changes but delivered disastrous results.
In 2017, London Breed, a charismatic city supervisor from the projects, took over as acting mayor after the death of Mayor Ed Lee. With promises of housing creation, downtown revitalization, and racial equity, she won the mayoralty outright in a special election. However, during her tenure, San Francisco saw massive tent encampments take over the city, the financial district and retail centers hollow out, and a rise in violence and crime.
Far-left public defender Chesa Boudin joined Breed in city government, further pushing progressive policies that backfired. Boudin, as district attorney, eliminated cash bail, reduced incarceration, and put pressure on law enforcement instead of criminals. The city soon saw a surge in drug-related crimes, overdoses, and property crimes.
Jennifer Friedenbach, the executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness, spearheaded a 2018 “tax-the-rich” ballot proposition that promised to raise funds for affordable housing. However, the proposition did little to solve the homelessness problem and led to high-net-worth companies leaving the city, further exacerbating the issues.
San Francisco’s police force shrank, businesses fled, and tourism dwindled. The city became known for its filthy streets, with an online “poop map” highlighting the problem. San Franciscans watched in despair as their once-vibrant city became a cautionary tale for the rest of the country.
In 2022, voters ousted Boudin, and a new mayor focused on increasing arrests and convictions. The city elected a calm and measured political outsider, Daniel Lurie, who prioritized public safety and cleaning up the city. San Franciscans are cautiously optimistic about the future, with signs of improvement on the horizon.
As New York City navigates its own political landscape, San Franciscans warn against falling for charismatic leaders promising simple solutions. The consequences can be dire, turning a marvelous city into a horrifying reality. New Yorkers must be cautious and vigilant, ensuring that their leaders prioritize the well-being of the city and its residents.
The cautionary tale of San Francisco serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful leadership and policies that prioritize the safety and prosperity of all residents. Let us learn from their mistakes and work towards building a better future for our cities.
