Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown gets $25K bail, GPS monitor on attempted murder charge

Former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown was granted release on $25,000 bail and ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor by a judge in Florida. This decision comes in light of the second-degree attempted murder charge Brown is facing, which carries a potential 15-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted. Brown, 37, has pleaded not guilty to the charge and will be residing at his home in Broward County, Florida, during the course of the case.

His lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, assured the court that Brown no longer has a passport and will cooperate fully in the legal proceedings. At a bond hearing, Eiglarsh stated, “He’ll be living at his home. I look forward to working with him zealously on this case.” Brown, appearing via video in a red jail shirt, only spoke to answer questions from the judge. Prosecutors had pushed for pretrial detention, citing Brown’s financial means as a potential flight risk.

The incident in question took place after a celebrity boxing match in Miami on May 16, where Brown allegedly grabbed a handgun from a security staffer and fired two shots at a man with whom he had a previous altercation. The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, reported a graze to his neck from one of the bullets. However, Brown’s attorney contested the allegations, claiming that Brown used his personal firearm in self-defense and that the shots were not aimed at anyone specific.

Contrary to reports suggesting Brown had fled to Dubai, his attorney clarified that Brown had been residing there for business reasons and always intended to surrender himself on the attempted murder charge. Eiglarsh stated, “He didn’t flee to Dubai. He always had a desire and intention to answer this case.”

Antonio Brown, a standout wide receiver in the NFL for 12 years, has had a successful career with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With 928 receptions, over 12,000 yards, and 88 total touchdowns to his name, Brown has left a lasting impact on the league. Despite the legal troubles he currently faces, Brown remains a prominent figure in the football world.
