Exclusive | Al Jazeera boss’ warning to staffers –

GENEVA — Al Jazeera English’s top executive cautioned employees to refrain from appearing to be part of political demonstrations shortly after one of the network’s reporters seemed to join a march advocating for Israel’s exclusion from the Eurovision Song Contest, according to information obtained by The Post.

Staffers at the Qatar-funded news organization, often labeled as a “Hamas mouthpiece” by Israeli officials, received the directive last month following a segment by reporter Charlie Angela from a protest in Vienna demanding the removal of Israeli singer Noam Bettan from the music competition.

In Angela’s coverage, leftist protestors were observed carrying signs with messages such as “no platform for Zionism and occupation!” while sporting Palestinian scarves called keffiyehs.

Angela initially reported from the scene of the demonstration where protestors accused Eurovision of normalizing war crimes by permitting Israel’s participation, before eventually walking alongside the demonstrators.

The news director, Ibrahim Helal, subsequently reminded staff to maintain a clear separation between journalism and activism, emphasizing the importance of covering events professionally without appearing as supporters of any cause.

The memo did not explicitly reference Angela’s coverage of the anti-Israel protest, which initially caused confusion among employees, given the prevailing conversations about Israel’s presence in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Al Jazeera generated controversy in the past for its reporting, particularly with its coverage of conflicts involving Iran and Israel. The network’s journalists maintain their independence, although critics, including Israeli politicians, accuse them of bias towards Iran and its affiliates.

In light of these controversies, Al Jazeera continues to defend its editorial integrity despite being financially backed by the Qatari royal family. The network’s former news director faced allegations of discrimination in the workplace, further adding to the scrutiny surrounding the organization.

Al Jazeera’s coverage has drawn both praise and criticism, with ongoing debates about the network’s objectivity and editorial practices. The Post reached out to Al Jazeera for further comments on these issues.
