The President of CBS News Plans a Major Overhaul of “Evening News” Broadcast
The president of CBS News is gearing up for significant changes to the network’s struggling “Evening News” broadcast, even as his own position within the network is uncertain, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Tom Cibrowski, a former executive at ABC who joined CBS in March, is reportedly set to remove one of the two anchors from the nightly broadcast, either John Dickerson or Maurice DuBois, as early as this week.
Additionally, there are indications that Cibrowski is considering replacing “Evening News” executive producer Guy Campanile, who has clashed with Cibrowski recently, with Tanya Simon, the new executive producer of “60 Minutes,” according to sources.
Insiders suggest that Cibrowski’s actions are an attempt to secure his position amidst the impending merger between CBS parent Paramount and Skydance Studios. However, there are concerns that Cibrowski might end up being removed from his role as well.
It has been reported that Cibrowski has faced challenges from Shawna Thomas, executive producer of “CBS Mornings,” and her job may also be at risk.
Jeff Shell, the new president of the merged Skydance-Paramount entity, has been interviewing news executives for Cibrowski’s position, with rumors circulating about potential new hires like journalist Bari Weiss and former CBS News president David Rhodes joining the network.
Regarding the anchors of “Evening News,” sources suggest that Maurice DuBois is likely to become the sole anchor, as he is seen as a better fit for the role compared to John Dickerson, who is known for his political reporting.
Issues within the show have been attributed to a lack of chemistry between the co-hosts, as well as a leadership vacuum. The departure of longtime “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens has also had an impact on the show’s direction.
Despite efforts to revamp the show with longer features, the “Evening News” team is said to be lacking direction and confidence, resulting in a disconnect with viewers.
Recent segments, such as a piece on astrology, have raised concerns about the show’s journalistic integrity and editorial focus.
Overall, the “Evening News” has been criticized for its lack of viewership and a perceived lack of coherence in its content.
With ongoing changes and potential shifts in leadership, the future of “Evening News” remains uncertain as CBS News navigates through a period of transition.
