Father Louis Scurti, an 80-year-old priest from Manhattan, has made a heartwarming gesture just in time for Christmas by donating his extensive collection of Nativity scene figurines to the Italian American Museum in New York City. This collection, which he lovingly curated over a lifetime, includes over 100 wooden figurines of Jesus, angels, and Wise Men from around the world.

Scurti’s fascination with Nativity scenes, known as “Persipica” in Italian tradition, began in his childhood in Jersey City, New Jersey. Instead of traditional toys, he gravitated towards playing with his family’s Nativity scene during the holidays. His passion for collecting these figurines only grew as he traveled the globe, adding pieces from countries like Rome and the Middle East, where the Nativity story originated.

Throughout his adult life, Scurti continued to acquire new pieces for his collection, including unique additions like dogs and other animals. Friends would often bring him back Nativity scene pieces from their travels, further expanding his collection. By the time Christmas 2024 arrived, Scurti’s collection had grown to over 100 pieces, making it a challenge to display each holiday season.

Upon discovering the Italian American Museum in Little Italy, Scurti felt compelled to donate his cherished collection to the institution. The museum’s director, Joseph V. Scelsa, welcomed the donation, recognizing the cultural significance of Scurti’s Persipica. The collection, which includes family heirlooms and valuable pieces, is considered “priceless” by Scurti, who plans to have it appraised to determine its true value.

The museum’s visitors have been deeply moved by Scurti’s donated collection, which now serves as the museum’s first permanent Nativity scene display. Scelsa appreciates the diversity and authenticity of Scurti’s collection, noting that it represents the true spirit of the Italian American community. The inclusion of various figures, including those who are elderly, disabled, or less conventionally beautiful, reflects a more inclusive and genuine representation of the Nativity story.
