FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccines Targeting New Subvariant
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved updated 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Novavax-Sanofi. The new shots target XFG, a recombinant Omicron subvariant that has become one of the most prevalent strains circulating in the United States, according to ABC News.
The FDA’s updated formula is designed to more closely match the viruses expected during the fall and winter respiratory season. XFG belongs to the JN.1 lineage, and the agency says its selection followed a review of variant circulation, vaccine effectiveness and immune-response data. The FDA’s guidance calls for a monovalent vaccine targeting XFG.
For patients, the most important change is eligibility. The updated vaccines are approved for adults 65 and older, as well as younger people with underlying health conditions that increase the risk of severe COVID-19. Specific age ranges vary by product. CNN reports that Pfizer’s vaccine covers ages 5 to 64 with qualifying conditions, while Moderna and Novavax-Sanofi have different product-specific age limits.
