FDA Raises Salmonella Egg Recall to Highest Risk as Cyclospora Outbreak Grows Nationwide

Two major food-safety investigations are putting extra attention on everyday kitchen staples: eggs and iceberg lettuce.

The FDA has upgraded Midwest Poultry Services’ egg recall to a Class I recall, its highest risk category. The recall involves white shell eggs and brown cage-free eggs sold under brands including Country Morning, Cal-Maine Sunups, Brookshire’s, Simple Truth, and Kroger. The eggs were distributed in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New Mexico.

Recalled cartons may show plant codes P-1950 or 0840962, Julian dates 157 through 184, and sell-by or best-by dates from July 20 through August 17, 2026. The FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak involving 98 illnesses and 26 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported. At the same time, a Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico has reached 9,481 illnesses across 17 states, including 398 hospitalizations and two deaths, according to the FDA’s August 13 update. Recalled Taylor Farms products: including select Marketside salad and shredded lettuce products sold at Walmart: should no longer be available, but consumers should still check refrigerators and discard recalled items. For both recalls, do not rely on cooking or washing to make a recalled product safe. Throw it away or return it, then clean surfaces and containers it touched. Salmonella may cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Cyclospora commonly causes persistent watery diarrhea, fatigue, bloating, and weight loss.
