Flash flooding impacts New York City transportation as storms hit the Northeast

More than 50 million Americans in the Northeast are currently under flood watches, as flash flooding wreaks havoc on transportation systems in New York City. The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings for several cities including New York City, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Newark, New Jersey, and Arlington, Virginia. Life-threatening flooding is a concern in western Union County, New Jersey.

In New York City, flooding has caused significant delays to transportation, with footage showing flood waters rushing into the 28th Street subway station. The NYPD Transportation has reported blocked roads, including the Cross Bronx Expressway at Jerome Avenue, urging commuters to seek alternate routes.

The impacts of the storms are being felt across the country, with over 1,900 flights canceled and more than 10,000 delayed nationwide due to the inclement weather. United Airlines, operating out of Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, has issued a ground stop to manage the high volume and congestion caused by the severe weather conditions.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency due to the flash flooding and heavy rainfall in parts of the state. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as slow-moving storms are expected to dump large amounts of rain quickly.

Reports of vehicles stranded in floodwaters have been coming in from Union County, New Jersey, and Westchester County. Widespread flash flooding has also been reported in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, following heavy rainfall in the area.
