Florida boaters rescued after 20 hours at sea when birthday party fishing trip turns upside down

A harrowing birthday celebration turned rescue mission unfolded off the coast of Clearwater, Florida, as four boaters found themselves stranded atop a capsized 24-foot sailing vessel for 20 hours. The dramatic rescue was carried out by the US Coast Guard, located 26 miles from shore.

The group of relatives had set out on a fishing trip from the Seminole Street Boat Ramp in Clearwater on Monday morning, expecting to return by 4 p.m. However, as evening approached and they had not returned, concerned family members contacted the Clearwater Police Department. This initiated a massive search effort to locate the missing boaters.

After a tense 20 hours at sea, a US Coast Guard plane from Air Station Miami spotted the capsized vessel at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday. The distressed boaters were seen waving frantically from the bottom side of their overturned boat as the plane passed overhead.

The Coast Guard swiftly deployed a life raft and a marine location marker to guide a boat crew to the stranded boaters. The group, ranging in age from 18 to 90, had spent a challenging night on the vessel before being rescued.

Once on land, the boaters were taken to Morton Hospital for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. Dennis Woods, the captain of the vessel, recounted the moment the boat capsized and praised the calmness of the group in a potentially catastrophic situation.

Despite the challenging ordeal, Woods expressed relief at being back on land and reflected on the memorable 70th birthday celebration that took an unexpected turn. The successful rescue was a collaborative effort involving multiple Coast Guard crews and partner agencies.

Ensign Gaige Garrett, Operational Unit Controller at Sector St Petersburg Command Center, highlighted the importance of safety equipment for boaters, urging the public to have essential items such as life jackets, signaling devices, and emergency locators.

The extensive search operation involved the US Coast Guard, Clearwater Police Department, Clearwater Fire and Rescue, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The successful outcome of the rescue mission served as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and safety measures while out on the water.
