Former Grey’s Anatomy Showrunner on Surprise Season 22 Exits

Former Grey’s Anatomy showrunner, Krista Vernoff, recently shared her reaction to the exits of longtime cast members Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd from the popular medical drama. In a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday, March 25, Vernoff expressed her admiration for Raver and McKidd, referring to them as consummate artists, extraordinary talents, and truly wonderful people.

Vernoff, who helmed Grey’s Anatomy from 2017 to 2023, posted a photo with McKidd and Raver on set while filming a scene for the current season 22. She praised their performances as Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt, stating that writing for their characters was always a great joy. Vernoff added that she knew their portrayals would be authentic, deep, rich, funny, and true, acknowledging that the show will miss them but expressing confidence that fans will continue to see their talent in other projects.

McKidd and Raver play the roles of divorced couple Owen and Teddy on the show, characters who have been through a tumultuous journey together, including marriage and raising children. The news of their final episode airing during the May season 22 finale was confirmed earlier in the day, with both actors addressing their departures on social media.

McKidd, who joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 5, reflected on his 18-year tenure on the show, describing it as a transformative experience that shaped him in ways he may not fully realize yet. He expressed gratitude to show creator Shonda Rhimes for trusting him with the role of Owen Hunt and revealed his plans to embark on new creative endeavors.

Raver, who first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy in season 6 and returned in season 15, also shared her sentiments about leaving the show in a heartfelt statement. She expressed gratitude to Rhimes and the writing team for the opportunity to bring the character of Dr. Teddy Altman to life, acknowledging the special place the role holds in her heart.

As fans prepare to bid farewell to McKidd and Raver’s characters on Grey’s Anatomy, the show continues to captivate audiences with its dramatic storylines and talented cast. Viewers can catch new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. EDT.
