Former Oklahoma death row inmate Richard Glossip back in court as case proceeds to retrial in 1997 murder case

Richard Glossip, a former Oklahoma death row inmate who spent nearly three decades behind bars, is back in court as he awaits a retrial for a 1997 killing that almost led to his execution three times. Last year, the US Supreme Court overturned Glossip’s initial conviction, leading to his release on bond by a state judge last month.

The upcoming hearing will determine whether Glossip’s case will proceed straight to a retrial or if there will be a new hearing to assess the evidence against him. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has stated that the state plans to retry Glossip on a murder charge but will not seek the death penalty again.

Glossip was convicted of the 1997 killing of his former boss, motel owner Barry Van Treese, in Oklahoma City. Prosecutors alleged that Glossip was involved in a murder-for-hire scheme, where Van Treese was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

The Supreme Court’s decision last year was based on prosecutors allowing a key witness to give false testimony, violating Glossip’s right to a fair trial. Throughout his time in prison, Glossip has maintained his innocence and garnered support from various individuals, including Kim Kardashian.

Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, Van Treese’s family had requested that Glossip’s conviction and sentence remain intact. During his time on death row, Glossip faced nine different execution dates and even had three separate last meals. In 2015, he was moments away from being executed, as he was held in a cell adjacent to Oklahoma’s execution chamber, awaiting lethal injection.

The retrial for Richard Glossip’s case signifies a pivotal moment in his quest for justice after years of legal battles and near-death experiences. The outcome of the upcoming court proceedings will determine the next chapter in Glossip’s fight to prove his innocence and seek justice for the 1997 murder of Barry Van Treese.
