French police arrest 2 Louvre jewel heist suspects amid manhunt
French authorities have made a breakthrough in the investigation of last week’s major jewel heist at Paris’ Louvre Museum, with the arrest of two suspects. The French National Police confirmed that one suspect was apprehended at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight to Algeria. The timing and circumstances of the second suspect’s arrest have not been disclosed.
Both men are believed to be part of a team that carried out the robbery at the Louvre. Hailing from Seine Saint Denis, a suburb of Paris, the suspects are facing serious charges in connection with the theft of jewels estimated to be worth $102 million. Despite the arrests, the whereabouts of the stolen gems remain unknown.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez commended the investigators for their swift action in a social media post, emphasizing the importance of continuing the investigation under the jurisdiction of the specialized interregional court of the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office. The nationwide manhunt for the remaining suspects was launched following the brazen theft from the museum’s Apollo Gallery shortly after it opened to the public.
The stolen items, including crowns, necklaces, earrings, and brooches with historical significance, were taken by a team of thieves who used a mobile freight elevator to access the museum. The suspects broke a window with an angle grinder and made off with the valuable jewelry after smashing display cases in the Apollo Gallery.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the heist as an “attack on a heritage that we cherish because it is our history,” vowing to apprehend those responsible. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati described the operation as “simple but spectacular,” underscoring the audacity of the thieves.
Following the theft, the suspects fled on motorbikes through central Paris, eventually heading southeast on Highway A6 towards Lyon. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities determined to bring all perpetrators to justice.
In conclusion, the arrests mark a significant development in the Louvre jewel heist case, shedding light on the sophisticated operation that targeted one of the world’s most renowned museums. The investigation continues as law enforcement officials work tirelessly to recover the stolen treasures and ensure that justice is served.
