General Motors to Move Production of Buick SUV from China to Kansas
General Motors has announced its plans to shift production of a Buick SUV from China to Kansas for vehicles sold in the U.S. This decision comes in response to the challenges automakers are facing due to stiff tariffs on vehicle imports and pressure from President Trump to invest in domestic manufacturing.
The successor to the Buick Envision compact SUV will be produced at GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City starting in 2028. Vehicles intended for sale outside the U.S. may continue to be manufactured in China. The new vehicle’s name has not been revealed yet.
GM emphasized that this production shift demonstrates the company’s commitment to American manufacturing and supporting U.S. jobs. The move aligns with GM’s recent investments of $5.5 billion in its U.S. manufacturing sites over the past year.
Since 2018, GM has been subject to a 25% tariff on imports of the Envision. The U.S. imposed baseline tariffs of 25% on most foreign-made cars and auto parts in 2025. As part of its manufacturing strategy, GM will also begin producing Chevrolet Equinox vehicles at the Kansas City plant in 2024 and expand production of the Chevrolet Blazer in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
Japanese automaker Toyota has also made commitments to invest up to $10 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations over the next five years, signaling a growing trend of automakers focusing on domestic production.
