Hackers Hit Android and iPhone Users’ Bank Accounts As Cybersecurity Firm Reveals 400% Surge in AI-Powered Malware Attacks

Cybersecurity Firm Zimperium Reports Surge in AI-Assisted Banking Malware Attacks

The latest findings from cybersecurity firm Zimperium reveal a concerning trend in the world of banking malware attacks, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a key role in their exponential growth. According to a recent blog post by Zimperium, instances of malware banking attacks utilizing AI have spiked by a staggering 400% year-over-year.

In the post, Zimperium highlights the concerning capabilities that AI brings to cybercriminals, stating, “What once required weeks of skilled reverse engineering now takes hours. Phishing lures are 5x more convincing. Variants are generated faster than detection can respond. Every stage of the attack chain is getting cheaper, faster, and harder to stop.” The firm also references the recent DarkSword exploit chain, unveiled at the RSA cybersecurity conference, as a prime example of how AI-assisted development is making such attacks more accessible and potent than ever before.

Moreover, Zimperium warns that AI is enabling cybercriminals to outpace anti-fraud measures, with 76% of security teams admitting they struggle to keep up. The firm’s “Mobile Banking Heist” report for this year identifies a total of 34 active malware families targeting 1,243 financial brands across 90 countries. These campaigns are described as industrialized, sophisticated, and scalable, continually evolving to circumvent app security controls and exploit both financial institutions and their customers.

The scale of these attacks is truly alarming, with three malware families alone targeting over 60% of the banking and fintech apps analyzed. This underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and vigilance in the face of AI-powered threats.
