Healthcare Firm Handing Up to $5,000 to Patients After Data Breach Allegedly Exposes 7,700,000 People
Labcorp, a healthcare company, has agreed to pay $35,000,000 to settle a class action lawsuit related to a cybersecurity incident that exposed patient information. The incident involved the American Medical Collection Agency data breach, where personal information transmitted by Labcorp to AMCA was compromised between August 1, 2018, and March 30, 2019.
The settlement, as detailed on the official settlement website, covers individuals whose information was affected by the breach. Up to 7,700,000 Labcorp patients were potentially impacted by the breach, according to HIPAA Journal. The $35,000,000 fund will be used to cover out-of-pocket losses, monitoring services, cash payments, notice and administration costs, taxes, service awards, and legal fees.
Affected individuals can submit claims for out-of-pocket losses up to $5,000 per person or opt for an alternative cash payment of approximately $50. They also have the option to receive two years of CyEx Medical Shield Pro monitoring services for their medical and healthcare information.
Labcorp has denied any wrongdoing or liability in connection with the breach. The settlement does not imply an admission of violating any laws.
