‘I was just really glad its mouth wasn’t open’

A shocking incident occurred at a Florida beach when a surfer was headbutted by an airborne spinner shark. The surfer, Darren Kaye, was enjoying the waves at New Smyrna Beach when the shark unexpectedly leaped out of the water and collided with him. The encounter was captured on video, showing the moment the shark smacked into Kaye’s head, causing him to fall off his board.

Kaye had noticed sharks in the area before, but he never expected one to come flying at him from above. Spinner sharks are known for their spinning leaps during feeding, and this particular shark was hunting fish when it collided with Kaye. Despite the terrifying experience, Kaye was relieved that the shark’s mouth was closed during the impact.

Describing the sensation as being hit by a car, Kaye quickly got back on his board and paddled away as fast as he could. Spinner sharks are not typically aggressive towards humans and have a weaker bite compared to other species like the bull shark. Despite the scare, Kaye returned to the beach to continue surfing, undeterred by the unusual encounter.

As summer brings warmer weather and more beachgoers to the coast, shark attacks become more prevalent. In a recent incident, a 9-year-old girl in Florida narrowly escaped losing her hand in a traditional shark attack. Fortunately, surgeons were able to reattach her hand. In another incident near Hilton Head Island, a beachgoer was attacked by a shark and airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

Despite the risks, Kaye remains passionate about surfing and continues to enjoy the waves at New Smyrna Beach. With sharks being a common sight in the waters off the coast of Florida, surfers and beachgoers alike must remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings to avoid dangerous encounters.
