Instagram introduces new restrictions for teen accounts, guided by PG-13 movie ratings

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, made an important announcement on Tuesday regarding new content settings for teen users on the popular social media platform. Moving forward, teen users will now be exposed to content that is akin to what one might see in a film with a PG-13 rating.

This new initiative by Meta aims to ensure that content seen by users under the age of 18 adheres to the same regulations as a PG-13 movie. The company has begun rolling out these automatic protections, with plans to have them fully implemented by the end of the year.

In a statement, Meta expressed their commitment to showing teens safe and age-appropriate content on Instagram by default. This move is designed to provide parents with peace of mind while also giving them more control over their teen’s online experience.

For those unfamiliar with the rating system, a PG-13 rating in the media industry indicates that parental guidance is suggested when viewing content, especially for children under the age of 13.

So, what exactly are these new restrictions that Instagram users under 18 can expect? Firstly, their accounts will automatically be set to a 13+ setting, with parental permission required to opt out. This setting will block teens from seeing search results related to topics like alcohol or gore, in addition to other sensitive subjects such as suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders.

Moreover, teens will no longer be able to follow accounts that regularly post content deemed inappropriate for their age group. Any existing connections with such accounts will be restricted, preventing teens from interacting with their content, sending direct messages, or viewing their comments on posts.

In a bid to further enhance safety measures, Meta is also updating its artificial intelligence technology on Instagram. The company has stated that A.I.s will now refrain from providing age-inappropriate responses that would seem out of place in a PG-13 movie.

Additionally, Meta is introducing a new setting called “Limited Content” for parents who wish to create a more restrictive experience for their teen. This setting filters out even more content from teen feeds while also limiting their ability to view, leave, or receive comments on posts.

This latest development by Meta follows the introduction of “Teen Accounts” last year, a feature aimed at safeguarding the younger user base on Instagram. Similar initiatives have been undertaken by other platforms such as YouTube and OpenAI in recent times.

Overall, Meta’s efforts to enhance safety and age-appropriate content on Instagram are commendable, signaling a step in the right direction for protecting teen users in the digital age. By implementing these new restrictions and settings, Meta is working towards creating a safer and more controlled environment for young users on its platform.
