Iran deal to reopen Strait of Hormuz ‘largely negotiated’
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that a peace deal with Iran, aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, is nearing completion and will be revealed soon. This potential agreement could bring an end to the conflict that has impacted global energy markets and contributed to a surge in U.S. inflation.
Trump stated that he engaged in discussions with leaders from various countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, focusing on finalizing terms with Iran.
According to Trump, an agreement has been largely negotiated among the United States, Iran, and other countries, with details currently under discussion. The deal is expected to involve reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical point for global energy trade.
Iran’s foreign ministry mentioned that the proposed agreement includes an initial memorandum of understanding, with broader talks scheduled within the next 30 to 60 days. However, there are apparent disagreements between the two sides that need to be addressed.
Reports from Iran’s Fars news agency indicated that Iran intends to maintain control of the Strait of Hormuz, despite Trump’s announcement of its reopening as part of the negotiations. The issue of Iran’s nuclear program and highly enriched uranium, essential for resolving the conflict, was not mentioned by Trump, as Iran has deferred nuclear talks until hostilities cease.
The announcement of the potential deal may be delayed due to security concerns following nearby gunshots near the White House. Earlier reports suggested that the agreement could pave the way for nuclear discussions, ease sanctions on Iran, and release Tehran’s frozen assets.
The conflict between the U.S. and Iran has led to a fragile ceasefire since April 8, impacting global energy markets and prompting fears of rising inflation. Negotiations between Pakistani, Qatari, and Iranian representatives, along with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, have been ongoing to reach a resolution.
Despite challenges, both sides are working towards an agreement, with Iran emphasizing its rights and expressing distrust towards the U.S. Trump’s demands for Iran to surrender enriched uranium and dismantle nuclear sites remain contentious points in the negotiations.
As discussions progress, the U.S. and Iran are navigating conflicting stances to potentially reach a resolution. Trump acknowledged ongoing negotiations and refrained from launching attacks on Iran this past week.
Gulf states have advocated for a halt in military actions, concerned about Iranian retaliation and further disruptions to energy markets. The situation continues to evolve, with updates expected as negotiations unfold.
