Jane Birkin’s original Hermès bag sells for over $10 million at Sotheby’s auction in Paris

The iconic Hermès Birkin bag, originally owned by the late actor and singer Jane Birkin, has recently made history by selling at auction in Paris for a staggering $10.1 million. This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a handbag at auction, according to Sotheby’s.

The coveted bag, which was crafted for Jane Birkin in 1985 after a chance encounter with then-Hermès leader Jean-Louis Dumas, was designed to meet the specific needs of the young mother. Birkin had expressed her frustration with not being able to find a bag large enough to carry all her daily essentials, including her baby’s bottles. Dumas quickly sketched a design that would later become the iconic Birkin bag, solidifying its place in fashion history.

Before hitting the auction block, the Birkin bag was part of a private collection and was briefly displayed in New York City. It was eventually sold in Paris as part of Sotheby’s Fashion Icons auction to an undisclosed buyer.

The Hermès Birkin bag has become a symbol of luxury and exclusivity over the years, with demand consistently outweighing supply. The bag is now available in a variety of colors, sizes, and leather types, with prices ranging from $5,000 to $220,000 for resold pieces. Only a select few craftspeople are trained in the intricate art of making the Birkin bag, leading to its scarcity and high demand.

Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, described the Original Birkin bag as a “true one-of-a-kind” piece of fashion history that has transcended into a pop culture phenomenon synonymous with luxury.

In a recent interview with “60 Minutes,” Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas highlighted the ongoing popularity and appeal of the Birkin bag, emphasizing that the limited supply ensures that each piece is highly sought after. Despite its hefty price tag, the Hermès Birkin bag continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
