Jane’s Addiction bandmates sue each other over onstage fight that ended tour

LOS ANGELES — Alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction is in the midst of a legal battle as members Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, and Eric Avery have filed lawsuits against each other following an onstage scuffle at a Boston concert last year. The incident led to the cancellation of their reunion tour and a planned album.

Navarro, Perkins, and Avery have filed a lawsuit against Farrell in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking at least $10 million. They allege that Farrell’s behavior throughout the tour had been erratic and out-of-control, culminating in a physical assault on Navarro during the concert. They claim that Farrell’s actions have tarnished the band’s name, reputation, and viability.

In response, Farrell and his wife, Etty Lau Farrell, have countersued the three bandmates, blaming them for the conflict and the violence that ensued. They accuse Navarro, Avery, and Perkins of engaging in a years-long bullying campaign against Farrell, including onstage harassment and attempts to undermine him during performances.

The Farrells claim that Navarro and Avery were the ones who actually assaulted them, leading to the breakdown of the band and the cancellation of the remaining tour dates. They also allege that their bandmates defamed Farrell by publicly stating that he had mental health issues.

Jane’s Addiction rose to fame in the late 1980s as a prominent part of the Los Angeles music scene, blending elements of punk, goth, and psychedelic sounds. The band achieved national success with hits like “Jane Says” and “Been Caught Stealing,” as well as by founding the Lollapalooza tour.

The group disbanded multiple times but reunited for their 2024 tour, the first time the original members had played together since 2010. However, tensions rose as Farrell missed rehearsals and exhibited erratic behavior during performances.

The lawsuit details an incident at a concert in Boston where Farrell allegedly lunged at Navarro on stage, leading to a physical altercation. While Farrell apologized for his behavior following the incident, both parties have now filed lawsuits against each other, alleging assault, battery, emotional distress, and breach of contract.

The future of Jane’s Addiction remains uncertain as the bandmates continue to battle it out in court, with the original members lamenting the end of their revival tour and the celebration of over 40 years of music. The once-revered band now faces a tarnished legacy due to the internal strife and legal disputes among its members.
