Jury should clear grotesque Harvey Weinstein of rape rap even if he skeeves them out: lawyer

Former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein is facing a new trial over allegations of raping an aspiring actress in a Manhattan hotel room. The 74-year-old convicted sex offender, who has been held in custody since his arrest in 2018, is once again in the spotlight as the legal battle rages on.

During the opening statements of the trial, Weinstein’s lawyer, Jacob Kaplan, made a compelling argument for his client’s innocence. He emphasized that the case should be based on proof, not popularity, and urged jurors not to let their personal feelings towards Weinstein cloud their judgment.

On the other hand, prosecutors painted Weinstein as a predator who used his power and influence to manipulate vulnerable women for his own sexual gratification. Assistant District Attorney Candace White highlighted the themes of power, control, and manipulation in Weinstein’s alleged crimes.

The specific charge that Weinstein is currently facing is third-degree rape for an incident that occurred in 2013 with aspiring actress Jessica Mann at a Manhattan hotel. While Weinstein was previously convicted of raping Mann and forcing oral sex on another victim in a separate trial, the guilty verdict was overturned by New York’s highest court, leading to a retrial.

Throughout the trial, Weinstein’s defense team has maintained that the encounters with his accusers were consensual and part of mutually beneficial relationships. They argue that the accusers are now mischaracterizing these encounters as criminal acts years later.

Mann is expected to testify about the alleged assault at the Doubletree Hotel in Midtown, where she claims Weinstein forced her to have sex. Weinstein’s lawyers are adamant that Mann’s participation in the encounters was voluntary and continued over a period of four years.

Despite facing multiple convictions and lengthy prison sentences in other cases, Weinstein continues to deny the allegations of rape and assault against him. He admits to moral failings but maintains his innocence when it comes to the criminal charges.

As the trial progresses, the outcome is uncertain, but the legal battle continues for Weinstein as he fights to clear his name amidst a string of disturbing allegations. The courtroom drama surrounding one of Hollywood’s most infamous figures is far from over, and the final verdict will shape the future of Harvey Weinstein’s legacy.
