Kia recalls more than 39K vehicles over faulty HVAC system that can cause fire

Kia America has issued a recall for more than 39,500 vehicles in the US due to a faulty HVAC system that poses a fire risk and could lead to injuries, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Approximately 1% of the affected vehicles, or around 395 cars, are believed to have the defect, as stated in a recall report released by Kia on Monday.

The recall applies to certain 2021-2023 Sorento vehicles that are equipped with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems containing a potentially faulty wiring assembly.

Kia has attributed the issue to a quality control problem at its supplier in Mexico, resulting in wiring with thinner gauges than usual, which could lead to overheating of the HVAC system and potential fire hazards.

Drivers may experience warning signs such as a malfunctioning blower motor in the HVAC system, a burning or melting smell, or smoke coming through the vents, according to the automaker.

The recall covers all 2021-2023 Kia Sorento LX vehicles produced between Sept. 10, 2020, and Dec. 29, 2023, at Kia’s Georgia factory.

It’s worth noting that the 2024 Sorento models come with a different HVAC system and are not part of the recall.

Owners are advised to take their vehicles to a Kia dealership for a free replacement of the wiring harness and blower motor resistor.
