LA junkie charged in slayings of ‘American Idol’ exec Robin Kaye and husband deemed incompetent to stand trial
The tragic murder of “American Idol” executive Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas DeLuca, shocked the Los Angeles community. The accused killer, 22-year-old Raymond Boodarian, has been deemed incompetent to stand trial for the heinous crime. As a result, he will be transferred to a California state hospital for involuntary psychotropic medication in an attempt to restore his competency.
Boodarian, a known heavy drug user with a history of mental illness and prior arrests, was charged with two counts of murder after allegedly shooting Kaye and DeLuca dead inside their $4.5 million Encino mansion in July. The couple, both 70 years old, were found days later by police conducting a welfare check.
The judge overseeing the case, Maria Cavalluzzi, ruled that Booradian lacked the capacity to make decisions regarding psychotropic medication and deemed it medically necessary for his psychiatric condition. Without the medication, he was at risk of serious harm to his physical and mental health.
Despite the ruling, Booradian’s specific psychiatric diagnosis was not disclosed to the public. The judge emphasized that restoration of his competency was crucial for the homicide case to proceed in the interest of justice.
Boodarian’s prior arrests, including charges of battery and making threats with a weapon, were instrumental in identifying him as a suspect in the double murder. Despite being released after at least two of those arrests, he has been held in custody without bail while undergoing mental evaluation.
The accused killer is scheduled to appear in court for a follow-up hearing on December 19th. The community continues to mourn the loss of Robin Kaye and Thomas DeLuca, while seeking justice for their untimely deaths at the hands of a troubled individual.
