Longtime ‘rude’ judge forced to resign after threats

Former New York City Judge Louis Nock Resigns Amidst Allegations of Misconduct

Former New York City judge Louis Nock has resigned from his position amidst allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behavior. Nock, who has served on benches in Manhattan and Brooklyn since 2015, was accused of threatening staffers who complained about his rude and unprofessional behavior with criminal complaints. The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct was investigating Nock for impermissibly practicing law while serving as a state supreme judge, earning a salary of $250,000 a year.

The Commission found that Nock often acted in a rude, demeaning, and unprofessional manner towards court staff, leading to a series of complaints against him starting in 2024. Nock allegedly threatened to file formal grievance complaints against Commission staffers unless charges were dropped, and even threatened a witness with a criminal complaint. In addition, Nock was under investigation for providing out-of-state legal services, using a personal email address titled “justicelounock,” and using the prestige of his judicial office to advance his private interests.

Despite denying the charges against him, Nock agreed to resign from his position after Labor Day. In his resignation letter, Nock stated that it had been the greatest honor of his life to serve as a judge and that he was looking forward to spending more time with his family. However, Nock has already landed a new job at the corporate law firm Anderson Kill as a shareholder and member of their corporate and commercial litigation group.

Nock’s attorney, Malcolm S. Taub, defended his client, stating that Nock served with honor and integrity and believed there was no basis for the complaints against him. Taub also mentioned that Nock had been seeking to transition into private practice before the allegations surfaced and that he is now looking forward to a new chapter in his legal career.

The resignation of Judge Louis Nock comes as a blow to the New York City judicial system, but it also raises questions about the accountability and ethics of judges in their conduct both on and off the bench. Nock’s swift transition to a prestigious law firm highlights the challenges of holding judges accountable for their actions and ensuring that they uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in their roles.
