Louisiana mall mass shooting victim ID’d as high school senior Martha Odom who went on NYC trip week before tragedy
A tragic incident unfolded at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, where a mass shooting took the life of Martha Odom, a 17-year-old high school senior. Martha, who was enjoying “senior skip day” with her friends, had recently returned from a spring break trip to New York City before the senseless tragedy occurred. The incident occurred in the mall’s food court when two feuding groups clashed, resulting in Martha being caught in the crossfire.
Martha, a student at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, was described as a bright and talented individual, excelling in academics and extracurricular activities. She was an editor for the school newspaper, The Authored Ascension, and was a captain of the girls’ soccer team. Additionally, Martha was a dancer who taught ballet to young children at a local studio.
Just days before her untimely death, Martha had shared a detailed recap of her spring break trip to New York City, where she visited iconic landmarks, attended Broadway shows, and enjoyed quality time with her family. Her enthusiasm for life and love for the arts shone through in her writing and social media posts.
The community, including her school and dance studio, mourned the loss of Martha, remembering her as a joyful and vibrant presence. Senator John Kennedy expressed his condolences, condemning the violence that led to Martha’s tragic death. Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Monique Boulet also shared her sorrow over the loss of such a promising young woman.
In the wake of the shooting, a suspect, Markel Lee, 17, turned himself over to the authorities and was charged with first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder, and illegal use of a weapon. He is currently held without bond at East Baton Rouge Jail. The police are also seeking another individual connected to the shooting, as captured on security cameras inside the mall.
The loss of Martha Odom has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, and the community is left grappling with the senseless violence that took her life. As the investigation continues, the hope for justice and healing remains strong, as Martha’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.
