Luigi Mangione’s fellow jailbird dishes on his job, daily routine and demeanor inside NYC jail

Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has found a unique role in federal lockup – cleaning showers and serving as a welcoming presence for new inmates. Michael Daddea, a fellow inmate at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, shared his experience of meeting Mangione in a video posted online.

Upon arriving at the detention center, Daddea was informed that he would be housed in the same unit as Mangione. Despite initial skepticism, Daddea was surprised to find Mangione to be friendly and welcoming, introducing himself and striking up a conversation within moments of Daddea’s arrival.

Daddea, who himself faced federal charges for allegedly 3D-printing “ghost guns,” recounted how he, Mangione, and another inmate quickly formed a bond during their time together in the facility. Mangione, described as a “model prisoner” by his lawyers, is known as a “collie” – an inmate with a prison job. In Mangione’s case, his job includes cleaning showers and other tasks within the unit.

In addition to his responsibilities, Mangione spends his time reading local newspapers to find articles about himself and engaging in activities with fellow inmates. Daddea shared that they observed Ash Wednesday together and shared meals daily. Despite their shared experiences, Daddea declined to comment further when reached by The Post.

In a communication sent from jail, Mangione expressed gratitude for various aspects of his life behind bars, including the Bureau of Prisons’ music catalog, weekly meals like “Chicken Thursdays,” and the support he has received from those who have donated to his commissary account. Despite facing serious charges, Mangione remains positive and thankful for the small comforts and connections he has found in prison.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on June 26. His time in federal lockup has been marked by camaraderie with fellow inmates, a sense of responsibility in his job, and a focus on maintaining a positive outlook despite the circumstances.
