Magnitude 6.0 earthquake strikes off the coast of El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Early this morning, a significant earthquake rattled the Pacific Ocean near Guatemala and El Salvador, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 6.0, occurred at 4:14 a.m. at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The epicenter was located 81 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Acajutla, El Salvador, and 107 km (66 miles) south-southeast of Puerto San Jose, Guatemala.
Acajutla serves as the primary commercial port of El Salvador and is a popular destination for cruise ships. Puerto San Jose is the largest town along Guatemala’s Pacific coast.
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake.
